Newspaper Positions

Roles, responsibilities, and deliverables for editors, writers, artists, and illustrators.

Editors

Responsibilities

Editors work directly with writers, review drafts, and may need to meet with them. Editor-writer meetings should be recorded for verification. Editors are expected to attend weekly or biweekly newspaper meetings and may oversee up to three writers.

Deliverables

Editors should revise their writers’ pieces and write at least one article per month themselves. If a writer plans to publish more than one article in a month, the editor should confirm that workload with the writer and the editor in chief.

Established writers

Responsibilities

Established writers attend weekly or biweekly meetings and reach out to an editor in chief and their designated editor before starting a new article. Meetings for revisions should be recorded for verification.

Deliverables

Write a minimum of one article per month.

Freelance writers

Responsibilities

Freelance contributors should stay in contact with their editor and follow through once they commit to a piece.

Deliverables

Complete the promised article.

Artists and illustrators

Responsibilities

Artists and illustrators work with editors and writers to develop visual material that fits the tone and accuracy standards of the publication. This can include article artwork, section visuals, promotional graphics, or other original supporting imagery.

Deliverables

Complete assigned artwork by the agreed deadline and revise collaboratively when needed so the final piece aligns with the article and the publication’s editorial direction.
