Abortion Rights

Dealing with the possibility of life, and the possibility of a ruined one, abortion rights continue to be a highly controversial topic. With one side arguing that humans should not have the power to dole out and restrict life and the other arguing that women should be able to control their bodies, the topic becomes even more layered.

In the case of those against abortion, people strongly believe in letting life grow, and with good reason as well. Each pregnancy results in the creation of a unique DNA sequence, completely different from eight billion other individuals. People argue so strongly against abortion rights because they believe eradicating life so early, at a stage where it has barely even had a chance to become something, kills so many possibilities. Life is beautiful, and rare, and precious, and by terminating a fetus, people believe that abortion snuffs out that unique spark of life, and there is no possibility of reviving it. For those against abortion, allowing fate to decide who is brought into or taken out of this world is one of the many reasons they stand by negation.

Those for abortion rights, however, speak with just as many valuable arguments. In many cases, women who wish to have an abortion are in no situation, whether it be medically or financially, to support a child. Some argue that bringing a baby into a household that simply cannot support it is a much crueler fate than abortion. Other times, if the mother has a medical condition, or is too young to bear a child, she may lose her life or remain weak after giving birth, leaving many women to stand for abortion. However, it is important to recognize that there is also an argument that abortions themselves cause medical harm to women, especially if they have a teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancies are another important aspect of this debate to consider. In many cultures, teenage pregnancies are considered unacceptable and disgraceful, often leading parents to kick out their children. Even if that does not happen, the teenager’s future may likely be affected. Balancing school and a baby at the same time is a challenging situation to be put in, especially if the mother does not have the support of her parents. Yet some teenage pregnancies lead to happy endings, with comfortable families that later grow to welcome more children and a healthy marriage.

On the darker side, many abortion cases are due to rape, with victims’ age ranging from forty to a shocking twelve years. Most often, the woman wishes to have an abortion and not carry the baby of her attacker, but there are some cases where the rapist forced a girl to have an abortion. Once again, this causes women to strongly support abortion rights.

Many argue that decisions about abortions should be left to the mother and the family and trust they will choose what is best for all of them, including the baby, while others argue that the baby must have a chance to grow and live. Each side contains important facts and data, so one must deeply understand both views before picking a side. And if one feels conflicted by both opinions, there is no need to delve into those debates, or strongly argue for one point of view. One can simply learn of the subject and move on, and it remains important that one does learn about abortion rights and the opinions around them.
